En entrecroisant avec une maîtrise éblouissante le destin de ces deux personnages, ennemis malgré eux, dans le décor crépusculaire d’une ville pilonnée par les bombes, Anthony Doerr dessine une fresque d’une beauté envoûtante. Bien plus qu’un roman sur la guerre, Toute la lumière que nous ne pouvons voir est une réflexion profonde sur le destin et la condition humaine. La preuve que même les heures les plus sombres ne pourront parvenir à détruire la beauté du monde.

Everyone that has read this book seems to love it to death. Sadly I'm not a part of those people. I can see why many people have given much applause to the story, but I did found it dull, and extremely slow pace. There was not enough "action" for my liking, the story is building up towards the meeting of Marie and Werner. Eventually, Marie and Werner's stories collide but only briefly and it is so unsatisfactorily like it only lasts for one chapter...Like come on, I haven't read more than 300 pages waiting for the two of them to meet, and when it finally happens it lasts not even one chapter... I found that the flipping back and forth between the different time periods is quite confusing and adds nothing in particular to the book.
Plus, I never felt a strong connection with either of the two main characters. I really wanted to love these characters but it didn't work out/
But even though I didn't quite love this book as much as I expected myself to, I still find it beautiful and well written. For me, It's a good historical fiction. I loved the fact that we get to read the point of view of characters that are on opposite sides of the conflict.

Tous ceux qui ont lu ce livre semblent l'aimer à mort. Malheureusement, je ne fais pas partie de ces gens. Je peux voir pourquoi beaucoup de gens ont apprécié cette histoire, mais je l'ai trouvée terne et extrêmement lente. Il n'y avait pas assez "d'action" à mon goût, l'histoire se construit autour du but ultime qui est, la rencontre entre Marie et Werner. Finalement, les histoires de Marie et Werner se heurtent mais seulement brièvement et c'est tellement insatisfaisant ! C'est dans ce genre de moment ou tu te dis " par pitié ne me dites pas que j'ai lu plus de 300 pages en attendant que les deux se rencontrent, et quand ça arrive enfin ça ne dure même pas un chapitre ..." J'ai trouvé que le va-et-vient entre les différentes périodes dans le temps était assez perturbant, et selon moi cela n'ajoute rien de particulier au livre.
De plus, je n'ai jamais ressenti de lien fort avec l'un des deux personnages principaux. Je voulais vraiment aimer ces personnages mais ça n'a pas marché.
Mais même si je n'ai pas vraiment aimé ce livre autant que je m'y attendais, je le trouve toujours beau et bien écrit. Pour moi, c'est une bonne fiction historique. J'ai adoré le fait que nous puissions lire le point de vue de personnages qui sont des côtés opposés du conflit.
