Yunjae was born with a brain condition called Alexithymia that makes it hard for him to feel emotions like fear or anger. Yunjae, 15 ans, n'arrive pas à ressentir les émotions. Son amygdale cérébrale, son "amande", ne fonctionne pas bien. Alors, pour se fondre dans la masse, il doit retenir les codes de la société comme les tables de multiplication : imiter les autres quand ils rient, dire bonjour, s'il te plaît, merci quand il faut... Paraître "normal", en somme. Quand une tragédie bouleverse sa vie, il se retrouve seul face à l'adversité. Contre toute attente, Gon, un garçon de son âge rebelle, colérique et violent, s'intéresse à lui. Entre eux naîtra une amitié improbable qui permettra à Yunjae d'expérimenter ses premières émotions. I wouldn't have picked up this book if it wasn't for Yoongi and Namjoon from the group BTS. They were seen reading and loving this book while filming the reality tv show "BTS in the Soop season 1".

So, like every normal person would...I wanted to know what it was about. Yeah, I know, totally not creepy behavior...Whatever.

This is an extremely quick book to read since the chapters are very short. I personally loved the short chapters since they kept the book moving at a decent pace.
I enjoyed it very much! It felt like one of those books you need to read at least once in your lifetime.

The blurb at the back of the book may seem a tad bit confusing, but in reality, the story is quite simple.
It's simply about how a different person can live in a society that does not accept any differences. It might not be relevant to every country, but this is a big subject in South Korea, which is a pretty conservative society. You can see it as a critic of the country, which is pretty bold of the author to do so.
It's also a book that explores human emotions and how some people can change someone's life, whether it's for the good or for the bad.

There's romance involved in this book, and for me, it felt not needed, it was even too much. I get why the author added this into the story, but I didn't like how it was done, at all. The female character was not likable.

I couldn't really understand the main character, Yunjae. I mean, this is the goal for this story, to put the reader in the shoes of someone that think differently than we are used to. For me, it added to the uniqueness of the book, in a metaphoric way it shows that it is ok to be and to think differently than others. 

Almond is certainly not a book that you pick just for a light read. 
The ending wasn't satisfactory it felt hurried and may be somewhat a bit unrealistic like the author didn't know how to end the story, yet weirdly, I enjoyed it!

If you want to try something different than your usual type of book, pick up this one. Who knows, you might end up liking it!

Je n'aurais pas prêté attention ce livre si Yoongi et Namjoon du groupe BTS ne l'avaient pas lu. Ils ont été vus en train de lire ce bouquin lors du tournage de l'émission de télé-réalité "BTS in the Soop saison 1".
Donc, comme toute personne normale le ferait... j'ai voulu savoir de quoi il s'agissait. Ouais, je sais, un comportement totalement pas chelou... Bref.

C'est un livre extrêmement rapide à lire car les chapitres sont très courts. Personnellement, j'ai adoré le fait que les chapitres soient relativement courts car ça permet au livre d'avancer rapidement.
J'ai beaucoup apprécié cette histoire! C'est un de ces livres qu'il faut lire au moins une fois dans sa vie.

Le résumé à l'arrière du livre est un peu déroutant et pas très clair, mais en réalité, l'histoire est assez simple.
Il s'agit simplement de savoir comment une personne différente peut vivre dans une société qui n'accepte aucune différence. Ce n'est peut-être pas pertinent pour tous les pays, mais c'est un gros sujet et problème en Corée du Sud. C'est une société plutôt conservatrice. Vous pouvez voir la discussion de sujet comme une critique du pays, ce qui est assez audacieux de la part de l'auteur.

C'est aussi un livre qui parle des émotions humaines et comment certaines personnes peuvent changer la vie de quelqu'un, que ce soit en bien ou en mal.
Il y a aussi une petite touche de romance dans ce livre, et pour moi, cela ne me semblait pas nécessaire, c'était même trop. Je comprends pourquoi l'auteur a ajouté cela dans l'histoire, mais je n'ai pas du tout aimé la façon dont cela a été fait. Le personnage féminin n'était pas sympathique ni agréable à lire.
Je n'ai pas vraiment compris le personnage principal, Yunjae. Je veux dire, c'est le but de cette histoire, mettre le lecteur dans la peau de quelqu'un qui pense différemment de ce à quoi nous sommes habitués. Pour moi, cela a ajouté au caractère unique du livre, d'une manière métaphorique, cela montre qu'il est normal d'être et de penser différemment des autres.
Almond n'est certainement pas un livre que vous choisissez juste pour une lecture légère.
La fin n'était absolument pas satisfaisante, elle semblait précipitée et peut-être un peu irréaliste comme si l'auteur ne savait pas comment terminer l'histoire, mais bizarrement, j'ai bien aimé !

Si vous voulez essayer quelque chose de différent de votre type de livre habituel, prenez celui-ci. Qui sait, vous finirez peut-être par l'aimer !

I have mixed feelings about that book. TikTok hyped it so much, so I was expecting something amazing… I was a bit disappointed, to say the least! 

The overall story was good, but in my opinion, the writing made it really hard to get into the story. There are a lot of descriptions, which I'm not a big fan of. The historical context in which the book is set was complicated to grasp. 1920s Shanghai, communism…

The pace is too uneven. Some actions took an enormous amount of time to develop for nothing, others that deserve, according to me, to be developed more were cut short. The characters run around in circles and accomplish next to nothing for a good portion of the book, and in the last few chapters, everything happens at once.
The story also took a couple of chapters (like maybe 10) to really start. Let me tell you, I really had to push through those first chapters to just not close the book and forget about it.

Despite all of that, I still enjoyed the overall plot. 

The “madness” was an interesting concept. I would have appreciated a bit more information about it, how it originated. I think we spent too little time on that matter of the story.

As for the characters, I liked them, but did not feel “close” to them, they felt distant.

Juliette and Roma were pretty ok. I find that for a retelling of Romeo and Juliet the romance was put too much in the background… I expected more interactions and tensions between the two characters.

The side characters such as Marshall, Benedikt, Rosalind, and Kathleen had so much potential, but weren't really useful to the story, apart from findings some information for the main characters they didn't do much… They were like stand-by players waiting to be picked to enter the game.

One of the good aspects of this book, for me, was that the author did not shy away from talking about sensitive subjects. Like the question of colonization that happened in China and how the native of the country felt about that. This book also has some wonderful queer representation, and we love that !!

I see why some people love this story with their entire hearts. It is a good book, but I think I had too many high expectations going into this book. Thanks for that TikTok ! 

I will surely read the second book because I still want to know how things will end.

J'ai des sentiments mitigés à propos de ce livre. TikTok l'a tellement hypé, donc je m'attendais à quelque chose d'incroyable… J'ai été un peu déçue, c'est le moins qu'on puisse dire !

L'histoire générale était bonne, mais à mon avis, l'écriture a rendu le tout vraiment difficile à lire. Il était aussi difficile d'entrer dans l'histoire. Il y a beaucoup de descriptions, dont je ne suis pas une grande fan. Le contexte historique dans lequel se déroule le livre était compliqué à appréhender. Le Shanghai des années 1920, le communisme etc…
Le rythme de l'histoire est trop inégal et mal réparti. Certaines actions ont mis énormément de temps à se développer pour rien, d'autres qui mériteraient, selon moi, d'être davantage développées ont tourné court. Les personnages tournent en rond et n'accomplissent presque rien pendant une bonne partie du livre, et dans les derniers chapitres, tout se passe en même temps.
L'histoire a également pris quelques chapitres (genre peut-être 10) pour vraiment commencer. Laissez-moi vous dire que j'ai vraiment dû m'accrocher pendant ces premiers chapitres pour ne pas fermer le livre et l'oublier.

Malgré tout cela, j'ai quand même apprécié l'intrigue générale.
La « Folie/Madness » était un concept intéressant. J'aurais apprécié un peu plus d'informations à ce sujet, comment ce phénomène s'est développé ou ce genre de choses. Je pense que nous avons passé trop peu de temps sur ce point clé de l'intrigue.

Quant aux personnages, je les ai bien aimés, mais je ne me suis pas sentie « proche » d'eux.

Juliette et Roma étaient plutôt bien. Je trouve que pour une réécriture de Roméo et Juliette la romance a été trop mise au second plan… Je m'attendais à ce qu'il y aie plus d'interactions et de tensions entre les deux personnages.
Les personnages secondaires tels que Marshall, Benedikt, Rosalind et Kathleen avaient tellement de potentiel, mais ne sont pas vraiment utiles à l'histoire, à part pour trouver des informations pour les personnages principaux, ils n'ont pas fait grand-chose… Ils étaient comme des joueurs attendant d'être choisis pour entrer dans le jeu.

L'un des bons côtés de ce livre, pour moi, c'est que l'auteure n'a pas hésité à parler de sujets sensibles. Comme la question de la colonisation qui s'est produite en Chine et ce que ressentait le natif du pays à ce sujet. Ce livre contient également de merveilleuses représentations queer, et on aime ça!!

Je comprends pourquoi certaines personnes aiment cette histoire de tout leur cœur. C'est un bon livre, mais je pense que j'avais trop d'attentes par rapport celui-ci. On dit merci TikTok pour les attentes élevées!

Je lirai sûrement le deuxième tome car j'ai encore envie de savoir comment les choses vont se terminer.
