I wanted to read this book after hearing that several k-pop idols had read it...I know that's lame!! But I thought that if they took the time to read this book while promoting or being on tour that must mean that this is a good book. This is not the sort of book I read usually so I didn't what to expect.
I bought this book, in French, at a thrift shop I was so happy to finally find it because I didn't want to order it on Amazon.
So, I started to read the story in French, but the fact that the story is told from the second person perspective kept bothering me because somehow it doesn't sound right in French. Then I decided to switch to English to see if it was better and thankfully it was a bit better. To be exact, I downloaded the audiobook on "Scribd". Reading this book from the second person point of view, I felt as if I was forced from the very beginning of the story to jump into the shoes of a character rather than to slowly get into knowing the character. It was maybe harder for me because as a 20 year old young woman, I had to try to identify myself as a man in his 70's or a woman in her 30's, it wasn't easy and it was kind of disturbing.
What I did love about this book were the theme and messages that the author tries to communicate.
This story is basically something to honor our moms. It also shows/tells us that we should, maybe, pay more attention to our beautiful mothers.
I love the fact that thanks to the different character's point of view can help us to understand how much a mom can sacrifice herself to help her children. Personally I realized that we, as children, should be more thankful to our moms because we don't know how much sacrifices they had to do to allow us to grow up in a secure and good environment. It's terrible how we tend to neglect the people who invest their entire life, money, and energy on us and by the time the realization dawns upon us, it is sometimes too late to take actions.
I don't even know if that makes sense...
To be honest, this book is not a happy, at all! It is, in fact, a kind of depressing read. I'm still having a hard time deciding if I actually liked this book or not.
The story in itself isn't something extraordinary, a mom went missing and her children and her husband are searching for her. While searching for her they all recall certain memories of her. What is special about the story, it's definitely the messages it conveys, and simply because of those beautiful messages you should this book!

Je voulus lire ce livre après avoir lu que plusieurs k-pop idoles l'avaient lu ... Je sais c'est nul ! Mais je pensais que s’ils prenaient le temps de lire ce livre tout en faisant la promotion de leur single ou en étant tournée, cela signifiait que c’était un bon livre.
Ce n'est pas le genre de livre que je lis d'habitude, donc je ne savais pas à quoi m'attendre.J'ai acheté ce livre, en français, chez Emmaüs. J'étais tellement heureuse d'enfin le trouver parce que je ne voulais pas le commander sur Amazon.Alors, j'ai commencé à lire l'histoire en français, mais le fait que l'histoire soit racontée à la deuxième personne ne cessait de me gêner, car ça ne sonnait pas bien en français. Ensuite, j'ai décidé de passer à l'anglais pour voir si c'était mieux et, heureusement, c'était un peu mieux. Pour être exacte, j'ai téléchargé l'audiobook sur "Scribd". En lisant ce livre à la deuxième personne, je me suis senti obligée, dès le début de l'histoire, de sauter dans la peau d'un personnage plutôt que dé d'apprendre lentement connaître le personnage. C'était peut-être plus difficile pour moi car en tant que jeune femme de 20 ans, je devais essayer de m'identifier à un homme de 70 ans ou à une femme de 30 ans, ce n'était pas facile et c'était assez dérangeant.
Ce que j’ai aimé dans ce livre, c’est le thème et les messages que l’auteur essaie de communiquer.
Cette histoire est, en quelque sorte, pour honorer nos mamans. Cela nous montre aussi que nous devrions peut-être accorder plus d’attention à nos magnifiques mères.J'aime le fait que, grâce au point de vue des différents personnages, nous puissions comprendre à quel point une mère peut se sacrifier pour aider ses enfants. Personnellement, j'ai réalisé qu'entant qu'enfants, nous devrions être plus reconnaissants envers nos mères, car nous ne savons pas combien de sacrifices elles ont dû faire pour nous permettre de grandir dans un environnement sûr et agréable. C’est terrible de constater à quel point nous avons tendance à négliger les personnes qui investissent toute leur vie, leur argent et leur énergie sont, au moment où nous réalisions, il est parfois trop tard pour prendre des mesures.
Pour être honnête, ce livre n’est pas heureux du tout! C'est en quelque sorte une lecture déprimante. J'ai encore du mal à décider si j'ai vraiment aimé ce livre ou non.
L'histoire en elle-même n'est pas extraordinaire, une mère a disparu et ses enfants et son mari la recherchent. En la cherchant, ils se souviennent tous de certains souvenirs qu'ils ont avec elle.
Ce qui est spécial dans l’histoire, c’est bien les messages qu’elle transmet, et simplement à cause de ces beaux messages, vous devriez lire ce livre!

I had to read this book for one of my English course. I would not have chosen this book on my own, especially because the plot isn't what I typically go for but still I'm glad I read it.
To be honest with you all, I didn't really like this book... It's kind of weirdly written and the story is just very confusing. What I mean by "weirdly written" is that we actually know what the story is really about almost at the end of the book! I know that some people find that very well done and interesting but sadly it was not the case for me.
Despite that, the story is interesting. The world that Kazuo Ishiguro has created is unique and helps the book to stand out. I would like to say that this book is kind of a dystopian novel for grown-up people.
It is not the type of book you are going to pick if you want a happy and comforting little book. The overall atmosphere of the novel is kind of gloomy and dark. I let you discover that but the story told in the book is rather dark and very disturbing in my opinion
The book is divided into three parts, each of them represents a stage in the life of our main character Kathy.
While I'm at it let's take a moment to talk a little bit about the characters of this book.
The story is written from the point of view of Kathy H, a 32 years old carer who looks back at her past. This how we met her two best friends: Ruth and Tommy with whom she has spent the majority of her life. They were raised together at a "boarding school" called Hailsham. But is it really a school ...?
Personally, I preferred the character of Kathy out of the three maybe because her temper seems close to mine... She's seemed to be a calm and quiet and kind person, there is a part in the book where she takes care of Tommy and tries to comfort him because the others are making fun of him. I don't know why but I really liked this part. My least favorite character is Ruth OMG I don't like her even a tiny bit. She's capricious and egocentric!
I had to write an essay on that novel as a final exam. While I was writing my essay something came up in my mind, this book doesn't have only one meaning. The author addresses different topics such as the need to belong or forgiveness and also self-acceptance. I think it's pretty interesting to discover how Kazuo Ishiguro has decided to talk about those topics in a very unique way, I'm not going to talk about that furthermore because I don't want to spoil you this entire story!
I would recommend this book to people who like mystery and also a gloomy atmosphere. It's definitely not the kind of story I would recommend to a young audience because it can be hard to understand at times... And some terms can be shocking.

J'ai dû lire ce livre pour un de mes cours d'anglais. Je n'aurais pas choisi ce livre par moi-même, surtout parce que l'intrigue ne m'attirait pas tant que ça, mais je suis quand même contente de l'avoir lu.
Pour être honnête avec vous tous, je n'ai pas vraiment aimé ce livre ... C'est bizarrement écrit et l'histoire est très déroutante. Ce que je veux dire par "bizarrement écrit", c'est que nous savons de quoi parle l'histoire presque à la fin du livre! En commençant ce livre je ne savais absolument pas quel était le "sujet" de l'histoire et personnellement quand je l'ai appris je ne m'attendais absolument pas à ce genre de "sujet" !
Je sais que certaines personnes trouvent cela très bien fait et intéressant, mais malheureusement, ce n'était pas le cas pour moi.
Malgré cela, l'histoire est intéressante. Le monde créé par Kazuo Ishiguro est unique et permet au livre de se démarquer. Je voudrais aussi souligner que ce livre est une sorte de roman dystopique pour les adultes.
Ce n'est pas le type de livre que vous allez choisir si vous voulez un petit livre heureux et réconfortant. L'atmosphère générale du roman est sombre et je dirai même morbide. Je vous laisse découvrir cela par vous-même, mais l’histoire racontée dans le livre est plutôt sombre et très dérangeante, à mon avis

C'est ainsi que nous avons rencontré ses deux meilleures amies: Ruth et Tommy avec qui elle a passé la majeure partie de sa vie. Ils ont été élevés ensemble dans un "pensionnat" appelé Hailsham. Mais es-ce que Hailsham est vraiment une école ...?
Personnellement, j'ai préféré le personnage de Kathy parmi les trois peut-être parce que son tempérament semble plus proche du mien ... Elle semble être une personne calme et gentille, il y a une partie dans le livre où elle s'occupe de Tommy et essaie de le réconforter car les autres se moquent de lui. Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais j'ai vraiment aimé cette partie. Le personnage que j'ai le moins aimé est Ruth OMG! Je ne l’ai pas du tout aimée !! Elle est capricieuse et égocentrique! Tout ce que je n'aime pas chez une personne!
Je devais écrire un essai sur ce roman comme examen final lors de mes partiels.
Pendant que j'écrivais mon essai, quelque chose m'est venu à l'esprit, ce livre n'a pas une seule signification. L'auteur aborde différents sujets tels que le besoin d'appartenance ou le pardon mais aussi l'acceptation de soi. Je pense qu’il est assez intéressant de découvrir comment Kazuo Ishiguro a décidé de parler de ces sujets d’une manière tout à fait unique. Je ne vais pas en parler plus, car je ne veux pas vous spoiler toute l'histoire!
Pour finir, je recommanderais ce livre aux personnes qui aiment le mystère et les atmosphères sombres. Ce n'est certainement pas le genre d'histoire que je recommanderais à un jeune public, car l'histoire peut être difficile à comprendre de temps en temps ... Et certains termes peuvent être choquants.
